A Seussical Tribute

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

How appropriate that this year UK World Book Day falls on the Birthday of the legendary Dr. Seuss!

drseuss300Theodor Seuss Geisel was born today March 2 in 1904 in Springfield, MA. The pen nameDr. Seuss was developed during his years at  Dartmouth College and the University of Oxford. His first jobs were mainly that of an illustrator, working for such companies as Time magazine, Vanity Fair, and Life. Our beloved Dr. Seuss  later became a famous American writer and illustrator; who we know as the author of famous children’s books such as The Cat in The Hat, Oh The Places You Will Go, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Green Egg’s and Ham

“Try them, try them, and you may! Try them and you may, I say.”

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish

“From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere!”

Horton Hears a Who!

“A persons a person no matter how small.”

The list goes on, and on. I have honestly never read a book by Dr. Seuss
that I did not like, let alone love. drseuss-brand-hero-01

His brilliance and charm have always captured my heart, as well as many others (of all ages and backgrounds.) I believe his clever and inspiring words will continue to have a profound effect on the literary minds of children, the world of education, and serve as an inspiration to those needing to get back to the basics.

Fun Fact:
During World War II, he worked in an animation department of the United States Army where he produced several short films, including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature

Please share about your Dr. Seuss experiences, books you love,
quotes that inspire you, etc.

“Twas the night before Christmas, when all thro’ the house. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”

The night before Christmas
Illustrated by Charles Santore

This poem was first published anonymously in 1823, as A Visit from St. Nicholas“, more commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas” and “Twas the Night Before Christmas” from its first line.“The Night Before Christmas” has enchanted children with the story of St. Nicholas climbing down the chimney and filling all the stockings before springing back to his sleigh. Many families read the poem every year, and now they have an edition to treasure. The cherished verse, faithfully reproduced here, is accompanied by Charles Santore’s lavish illustrations.      Rated 4.4 on amazon.com

The poem was later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837. Some commentators now believe the poem was written by Henry Livingston, Jr.

“It’s fruitcake weather!”

A Christmas Memory
by Truman Capote

Originally published in 1956, this is the story from Capote’s childhood of lovingly making fruitcakes from scratch at Christmas-time with his elderly cousin, and has stood the
test of time to become known as an American holiday classic. Another great story to sit around with loved ones and read aloud by
the fire. But just as charming to read alone,
or following along while listening to the
audio version.

Book Bean:  Frothy Fruitcake Steamer
Heat milk. In a blender combine; milk, a drop of almond extract (and/or use almond milk,) a few craisens, a little grenadine, orange zest, and bit of sugar and nutmeg to taste. Blend until frothy. Top with crushed almond (or other nut, also good candied.)

I read this short story last year on Christmas day, and I loved it. I highly recommended it for a cozy read.

“Always, the path unwinds through lemony sun pools and pitch vine tunnels.”

“It’s bad enough in life to do without something YOU want; but confound it, what gets my goat is not being able to give somebody something you want THEM to have.”
