Contemporary Reading

12829695-mmmain - EditedI enjoy reading a large variety of different books. Contemporary fiction is a bit of a loose term considering that time and reality are always changing.
A book that once 50, 100, or even 500 plus years ago was considered contemporary fiction, may seem to us to be historical fiction. Also, many times we read books written way before our own time that was meant to be science fiction, but considering the development of current technology seems now to be dsytopian/contemporary. This of course is one of the many beauties of literature; the variety of experiences that can be enjoyed all thought the ages. I personally do not tend to read as much “current” Contemporary fiction, but I have read some great ones.

Here are some current contemporary fiction highlights:

“And Then There Where None”
Agatha Christie

Also a mystery, but a very realistic and enjoyable adventure. It is an excellent book with lots of intrigue and fun twists. The story takes place on a secluded island where we learn about a variety of interesting characters. And of course try to figure out, who done it?This book is probably Agatha Christie’s most famous work.

  2. Oh, too many favorites to list! I do love anything by Margaret Atwood and Lorrie Moore and oh my gosh, so many, too, too many others. P.S. I read “And Then There Were None” as a teenager and still remember parts of it, and lord knows that was a long time ago, lol. And I liked “Perks” more than “Fault in Our Stars.” It just felt more authentic. Cheers and happy reading.

  7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower has to be one of my favorite contemporary’s, I read it when I was younger and have re-read it multiple times since :).
    I jumped on the hype train and read Me Before you and loved it! I can’t wait for the movie to come out I think the actors look fantastic. TFIOS is fantastic but the hype ruined it for me unfortunately. I’m planning on a re-read of it this month so hopefully I enjoy it more now I know the story 😀

  8. A book that really stayed with me was ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ by Johnathan Saffran Foer. It’s an incredibly well written and moving read. I’ve also read both The Fault in Our Stars, and Perks, and thought they were both ‘just ok’. I might need to re-read them!

  10. And then there were none is also one of my favourite. Ironically, I think it would have been even better if only, in the end, Agatha hadn’t told us who has done it! I found the ending a little bit mechanical.

    I am a huge fan of Stephen King, too (there is 11/22/63 on my bookshelf) and of an Italian writer whose name is Valerio Evangelisti. He is a science fiction and historical novel author, but I don’t know if he has been translated in English.

    • I know what you mean, keep the mystery. I haven’t heard of Valerio Evangelisti so I’m not sure if his work is translated, I’ll have to look into it. I also like Stephen King, but I tend to like the less popular books, like Rose Madder.

      • I think that, even if he has been translated, he’s not very famous in the States. I know he’s quite famous around Europe (his works has been translated in a lot of European languages).

        By King, I’ve really loved two books: Carrie and Misery.

  19. I would like to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I’ve seen it reviewed so often. I just took a look at what I’ve been reading lately and I realized that much of it is historical fiction! Two of my more recent favorites from this genre are The Hours Count by Jillian Cantor and A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson.
