Theodor Seuss Geisel was born today March 2 in 1904 in Springfield, MA. The pen name Dr. Seuss was developed during his years at  Dartmouth College and the University of Oxford. His first jobs were mainly that of an illustrator, working for such companies as Time magazine, Vanity Fair, and Life. Our beloved Dr. Seuss  later became a famous American writer and illustrator; who we know as the author of famous children’s books such as The Cat in The Hat, Oh The Places You Will Go, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Here are a few of my favorites:


Green Egg’s and Ham

The list goes on, and on. I have honestly never read a book by Dr. Seuss that I did not like, let alone love. drseuss-brand-hero-01

His brilliance and charm have always captured my heart, as well as many others (of all ages and backgrounds.) I believe his clever and inspiring words will continue to have a profound effect on the literary minds of children, the world of education, and serve as an inspiration to those needing to get back to the basics.

Fun Fact:  During World War II, he worked in an animation department of the United States Army where he produced several short films, including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature

  3. Our local paper has just finished a fortnight of supporting and encouraging children’s literacy. Included were daily vouchers to buy 14 of Dr Seuss books for a nominal price, little carry case includes. Guess what big kid collected the lot!

  5. It’s funny because I’ve never really liked the cat in Dr. Seuss’ books. But I do love the quotes and find them really inspirational and there’s one for any occasion.

    For example when I found that I was not happy with my work, I decided to go and try something else:

    “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.”

    And then this one is great for us short people:

    “A persons a person no matter how small.” 😉

    • The Cat in The Hat is probably my least favorite by Dr. Seuss. Great quotes, he was very inspirational, he could educate those of all ages, and that is a a great accomplishment!

  9. When I was a little girl, the local children’s librarian had a a reading circle every Monday afternoon. The library thronged with kinds. Two series of books never made it past the desk and on to the shelves and when one returned one’s books and before choosing new ones, one asked “Any Dr Seuss? Any Tintin?” Asterix was another one. We were all rationed, if there were any available to one or the other, and only one. Then we had to choose “proper” books for the rest. Lovely memory, thanks Abbie.

  15. I never read any Dr. Seuss when I was a kid, but I’m having a great time reading his books to my 7 year old daughter. We like Green Eggs and Ham, of course, Horton Hatches the Egg, and I Can Read With My Eyes Shut. Lots of others. We love his whimsical silliness.

  18. “Oh, the places you’ll go! And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and3/4 percent guaranteed.) Kid, you’ll move mountains.” This book was always in the senior showcase I did on their last day.
    I also did a main hall showcase in honor of Dr. Seuss every year for his birthday-for high school level students. They loved it. You are never too old for Dr. Seuss! And I had to buy some of his books for my three-year-old granddaughter this past Christmas to introduce her to his magic.

  20. Everyone at our house loves him too! Last night my kids and I read The Big Book of Beginner Books about Me and Green Eggs and Ham. Last year The Cat in the Hat was my son’s favorite book. We read it at least three times a day for an entire year. I can recite from cover to cover.

  29. There really is something, I don’t know just what, that lets rhyming words, reach a heart that is shut. It’s like opening a door, (there must be a key). that let’s you be you, and me be me. In Horton’s Who, in the Lorax’s thneed, in the Cat’s hat, or the Grinch’s deed, there’s something for everyone, something we need. I’ll leave it at that, and make you a bow, you really did nail it, you showed us all how! Thanks, Dr. Seuss, you’re our favorite, it’s true, and, of course, that includes, you, Abby Lu…Who!
