Book Love-Poem

It is a day of love, and how better
to express that love, than with a love-poem:

There is no Frigate like a Book

To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry –
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll –
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human Soul –

~Emily Dickinson
Book-Week-Childhood-101Fun Fact: “There is No Frigate Like a Book” comes from a letter written in 1873, and was actually originally published in Volume I of her Letters (1894), not in a book of poems.

  1. One of my favorites.

You wonder the patterns which evoke our verbal pleasure in the metaphors of water, travel, sunny dark skies, the flavors we attach to taste in the visual displays of our minds eye. All the senses coming to our consciousness; lending us in someway a tiny window into the vast beauty we have yet to open our eyes to.

I think of love that way; the spiritual force that permeates all things if we stop and think to see how its flows all around us. Valentines day isn’t a dark history, nor the cash cow for some company, its a collective touchstone for remembering those important things in life.

When we look to the gifts of the day; we should remember that we are not buying a love, a discontent, an hour of sex or a temporary peace with those we profess to love, we are remembering those seeds of our relationship by which the very nature of our lives take meaning.

So when you buy the chocolates, the flowers, the big bear or pajamas or any of the creative commercial gifts we feel drawn to at times, they are baubles it is true; yet they are also glad tidings, happy wishes, hopeful dreams relived in showing those we are connected to; that they matter.

When seen from that perspective we start to slow down, remember all the many moments, those seeds of friendship, love, that bespeaks the nature of God herself. For on days like today, isn’t the nature of a creative God seen in the women we love, the children we have, the nature of those thoughts of love that hold it all together.
