Café Cubano

Hearts in my Café con leche

handI recently visited my favorite Cuban eatery for some amazing food and a perfect Café con leche. This inspired me to share a little about Cuban coffee.

Café Cubano
d5d903e8596edec187da2d58bdb7a026
AKA Cuban Espresso;
is an espresso shot that is sweetened with demerara sugar (natural brown raw sugar) as it is being brewed (percolated,) but the name covers other drinks that use Cuban espresso as their base. Cafecito and Cuban Coffee are a couple other names used.

CortadoCortadito
Cuban Espresso with a float of steamed milk. The word cortado is the past participle of the Spanish verb cortar (to cut.) This is because a dash of warm milk is being used to cut the espresso shot (like the italian caffé macchiato.)

Spanish-food---cafe-bombon

Café Bombón
Espresso served with sweetened condensed milk in a 1:1 ratio. Bombón means chocolate in spanish.

Café con leche

Cuban Espresso unsweetened with steamed (or scalded) milk (like a caffé latte.) My favorite, but I actually like it with a little demerara sugar

Carajillo

Irishcoffee-2A classic spanish cocktail combining coffee and rum typical throughout Spain and Latin America. Folk etymology dates the origins back to the Spanish occupation of Cuba. Combine Café Cubano, rum, Licor 43, demerara sugar, chantilly cream.

That’s all for my little Ode to Café Cubano

Have you ever tried any of these? Or something similar.

Fun Fact: Sugar is the principal agricultural economy in Cuba. In two years after World War II, the price of sugar in Cuba went from 4 cents a pound to more than 20 cents a pound. They make some good sugar!

  1. Wow, I’m speechless I have never known so much about coffee before. Here’s why that’s a good thing, it shows you know your Express O’s. Being Italian I can concur with the lighting of Express O’s even though I personally hate coffee but that’s another story for another day. If you wanna know the story I’d be glad to tell it to you someday down the road. A job well done with the write up about your coffee consumption. Even though I hate coffee he made an Italian boy smile. Don’t feel too bad, I also hate cigarettes too. Just so you know I wasn’t picking on coffee. A job well done with this post.

      • Yeah, I can still appreciate it. In my case, I think I would rather enjoy cup of expresso Laura cappuccino everyday however when I was in 7th grade I had a teacher who drank coffee like it was water well at the same time smoking cigarettes on an equal basis. So although I don’t share your love for coffee I can appreciate a good blog. I also understand what it means to be a good writer and acknowledging that is the first step in getting a good audience. My advice to you is keep drinking your coffee and keep writing.

      • Dear Abbie, my thinking is that you like reading it goes along with drinking your coffee. It’s a great relationship between the two. So if you like reading and you like your coffee I encourage you to pay close attention to chapter 4 of my book which will be published today at some point. The chapter deals with the good and bad guys in television. So when it boils all down to the essence of things you can expect three things. As long as you have your coffee you’ll have an opportunity to read as well as the visually stimulated by pictures while browsing through the most detailed experiences in my life as it relates to the effect television has had on me both good and bad. I appreciate your viewership and hope you enjoy what is to come in my future post.

  2. I love this post! I am a fan of coffee, but it seems my tastes are pretty simple. I think I’m going to visit my local coffee shop this weekend and see what they have to offer beyond my usually plain coffee.

    • I think that’s great, I found some of my greatest coffee loves, just by trying something new. See if you have a local Cuban eatery/bar most of the drinks should be fairly universal. I hope you find something wonderful, let me know if you do!

  4. Apparently my writing resources aka my computer is down so I won’t be able to post the chapter today, however I will tomorrow. I promise you the chapter will be a thrilling read indeed. No pun intended on the ride but that was cool anyway. Until then keep reading keep breathing and keep drinking your coffee but just keep the coffee away from me. I kid, I kid…

    • Coffee is such an intricate plant. There is much more to it, and the amazing beans we harvest from it. I love sharing all the different facts and drinks I learn about. I hope you get a chance to try something, some of my favorite drinks are ones that I went out on a limb to try. 🙂

      • You might be able to find something similar, but probably not the exact thing. A Caffe Machiatto is pretty close to a Cortadito, and even Starbucks carries that. A flat white is the closest to a cafe con leche. If you can’t find those things, just trying something new and different at your local shop may prove rewarding. You could also attempt it at home, you never know you may make the best drink you’ve ever had!

    • I do love Roald Dahl’s work, he has so many great stories. However, I have to stick by my love of The Chronicles of Narnia. I just adore C.S. Lewis’ wit and ease. His stories are so full of splendor and charm, reading them (especially to a child,) is just magical. 🙂

  6. On tomorrow’s blog post look forward to three separate entries. Entry number one will be chapter 6 of my book. Entry number 2 we’ll talk about how people are addicted to their cell phones. Entry number 3 will talk about independence versus dependency in mankind and having the faith to walk on the waters.

  7. Even though I’m looking forward to watching the show I have my reservations. I could do well as a television series because the original cast is back, however the only dilemma I see now is the return of the Olsen twins. I can see fans of the show who grew up on the original series becoming restless because there is no MK & a. that is not to say I won’t do well after all there is one TV show there that has done it successfully well of course that show being Girl Meets World spinoff from Boy Meets World

  8. I traveled to Florida, all the way to Key West, twice. I miss Cuban coffee and pork sandwiches “Cuban Mix” more than any other experiences there. Oh, and the sunsets. Thank you for posting this. I was enjoying the article about cafes and got here, and would love to travel to experience these great places.

  9. You forgot La Colada. The cuban version of black coffee. Once you drink that stuff you will see the future. If you like your coffee really sweet you would order it as ” una coladita bien dulcecita”. The person who is making your coffee is going to want to know how you learned to order coffee like that :>)
